DESCRIPTIVE SYSTEM DOCUMENT COMPILATION (DSD)

WHAT IS A DSD

A Descriptive System Document (DSD) is a mandatory technical record required to be created for all intrinsically safe systems. The Descriptive System Document is a technical justification for the combination of the apparatus and verifies that the complete system is intrinsically safe and is suitable for use in Hazardous Area as appropriate. A DSD is necessary to ensure that any installation complies with the relevant equipment certificate as well as with EN 60079-14 / EN 60079-17 and any other requirements specific to the plant on which the installation takes place.

A compliant Descriptive System Document (DSD) demonstrates technical due diligence and legal compliance by verifying that all components within an intrinsically safe system are correctly specified, compatible, and conform to applicable standards. It ensures the safety of the system prior to energisation or commissioning by confirming that safety parameters such as voltage, current, inductance, and capacitance are within acceptable limits. The DSD forms a vital part of the site’s Verification Dossier, which must be readily available on-site or stored in an accessible location for inspection or audit purposes. By documenting the intrinsic safety of the system, the DSD significantly reduces both regulatory and operational risk within hazardous areas.

WHAT WE PROVIDE

We offer a holistic DSD compilation service as part of our ATEX and IECEx process safety service offering. Our service offering encompasses all compliance requirements to be delivered as an output of the DSD compilation:

The DSD shall be reflective of the latest versions of the applicable standards;

  • I.S EN 60079-11
  • I.S EN 60079-25
  • I.S EN 60079-14

LEGAL AND REGULATORY COMPLIANCE

EQUIPMENT REGULATIONS – [ATEX 114 | FORMERLY ATEX 95]

Our compliant DSD enables attestation with the legal and regulatory requirements. This legislation pertains to equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.

Compliance with applicable harmonised standards supports conformance and reflects current best practice as per the European Commission’s latest Summary List of Harmonised Standards.
